The area
Pylos, Methoni and Finikounda are located in the district of Messinias (Capital: Kalamata).
The regional Capital is Pylos.
The major amenities like big shops, government offices and hospitals are located in Kalamata, which is about 50 km northeast of Pylos and can be reached through a straight road through the lovely hillside of the Messinias in about 1 hour.
Pylos itself has, as a regional capital (Dimos Pylou) some government authorities and a health center. Nevertheless, you get most things for your everyday life in this little city of about 3000 inhabitants located on the south tip of the famous Navarino Bay, where in 1827 the combined english-french-russian sea forces downed the turkish-egyptian fleet to ultimately free Greece from the long lasting turkish occupation. An interesting link to Pylos and its surrounding villages can be found here or in the links page.
Methoni as the second largest community of Pylia with about 1200 inhabitants is a well known tourist resort with a beautiful bay, an impressive castle of historical importance, a lovely square right next to the shore and some beaches. More information about Methoni can be obtained here.
Finikounda is probably the most touristic place in this area. With around 500 inhabitants, this sleepy little village in winter becomes a vibrant location due to the beautiful Anemomylos and Ammos Beaches that stretch around two kilometers to the west. More information about Finikounda can be obtained here.
