Costa Navarino - The biggest golf complex in the Mediterranean !

The " Costa Navarino" as such doesn't really exist ...
It is the name of a very ambitious project of one of the biggest shipowners in Greece.
Vassilos Constantakopoulos whom everyone calls "Capitano".
Since 1984 he has continually bought land around the bay of Navarino to build the biggest
golf resort in the Mediterranean.
Four different areas named Navarino Bay, Navarino Dunes, Navarino Blue and Navarino Hills will comprise seven to eleven top class hotels (Starwood und Westin), four to seven golf courses, infrastructure for shopping as well as restaurants and bars. This on around 1000 acres (hectares) of land in one of the touristically least developed area in Greece.
The designer of the greens is no less a person than Bernhard Langer.

Below you see the strip of coast called Costa Navarino.

Capitano and his son Achilles made a great effort to embed the resorts in line with nature.
This in particular since the Voidokilia bay is a well known bird sanctuary.
4500 large olive trees have been planted, two giant water reserves for watering have been created and all greens have been underlaid with a hose system to gain geothermal energy.

The first hotels and greens will be opening in spring 2010.
